Adults Need to Play Too…
I had so much fun last week getting ready to teach my first art journaling workshop with my friend Christa. Like joyful, carefree, boundless fun! A few days later I realized how long it had been since I had actually had that kind of fun and it struck me…we adults have stopped giving ourselves permission to just have fun for the sake of having fun; we’ve stopped playing like children. And, I can tell you with the utmost of confidence – we should all still be finding time to allow our playful selves to emerge with toddler-like abandon! It’s good for our hearts, our brains and our physical health.
This is why I am teaming up with my friend and artist, Christa MacFarlane to teach art journaling to others. Because, even more than a need for us adults to embrace play as a regular life practice, we need to connect…with ourselves with others. It’s important…like really, really important.
For those skeptics who need some sort of hard, fast science in order to commit to regular play time (don’t worry…I’m the same way), here you go:
There’s a reason why adult coloring books are among the top selling books on Amazon.com. Adults need to play the same as children. In fact, author Stuart Brown in his book Play, cites play as the “purest expression of love.” Which is why I’ve become serious about play and helping others find ways to make play part of their daily lives. For me, one of the best ways I’ve found to play is through art journaling.
For those not familiar, art journaling is the playful mingling of art and words resulting in individual expression and self-discovery. I think it’s boundless creativity at its very best because there are no rules…there is no right or wrong…and the only experience needed is the ability to approach it with a playful heart and mind. Art journaling allows one to go deep into self-discovery or not; to share one’s work or keep it personal; to develop new practices and techniques or simply doodle.
So, whether it’s hula hooping or coloring, writing or painting or anywhere in between – give yourself the gift of play!
